Liverpool FC and The European Cup

Liverpool FC has a fantastic record of success in Europe having won the European Cup four times! Indeed, only Real Madrid and this year's final opponents AC Milan have won more times, with nine and six wins respectively. Below you will see details of all the previous European Cup finals that Liverpool have won.

1977: Liverpool 3
Borussia Moenchengladbach 1 (Rome)

Liverpool became only the second English club, after Manchester United, to lift the European Cup. It was Kevin Keegan's last game for the club and Tommy Smith made his 600th Liverpool appearance. And it was Smith's headed goal that lingers most in the mind from a convincing victory.

1978: Liverpool 1 Bruges 0 (Wembley)

Liverpool became only the sixth club to retain the trophy at Wembley. Kenny Dalglish had arrived from Celtic to replace Keegan and scored the winner. Liverpool never looked in danger of losing their crown.

1981: Liverpool 1
      Real Madrid 0 (Paris)

Alan Kennedy scored a splendid
winner against a star-studded
Madrid team that included
future Real managers Vicente Del
Bosque and Jose Camacho, plus the
late Laurie Cunningham. The match
was Ray Clemence's last for Liverpool.

1984: Liverpool 1 Roma 1 Liverpool won 4-2 on pens (Rome)

Liverpool survived a dramatic penalty shoot-out with Bruce Grobbelaar's wobbly knee trick distracting Francesco Graziani for the crucial miss.
